Elaine BaughmanElaine Baughman has been a top oboe performer and teacher in the Washington DC area for the last 25 years. She received her Bachelor's degree from Indiana University and Master's from Catholic University of America. Elaine has studied with Earnest Harrison (National Symphony Orchestra), Gene Montooth (Washington Opera Orchestra), Jerry Sirucek (Chicago Symphony), and Rudy Vrbsky (National Symphony Orchestra). Leaving the DC area where she grew up, Elaine spent nine years with Mexico's finest orchestras, including several years as Principal Oboe of its National Symphony Orchestra. Since returning to the DC area in 1982, she has free-lanced with the major ensembles in the area, including frequent performances with the National Symphony Orchestra. She has played English horn with the Washington Ballet Orchestra for 18 years. Today, Elaine looks forward to many more years of saving the world from bad oboe playing, one student at a time. Jeff Bianchi The 2006-2007 season marks Carl (Jeff) Bianchi’s sixteenth year as the conductor of the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra and the eleventh year as the director of Virginia’s Ambassadors of Music to Europe. He was elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 1987, and became its President in 2007. He was Director of Bands at James Madison High School, in Vienna, when they represented Birginia at the annual Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic (1980 and 1992). Jeff graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music and Performer's Certificate in French Horn, and did his graduate work at Catholic University. From 1964-68, he was a member of the U.S Marine Band, "The President's Own," in Washington, DC. He has performed with the National Gallery Orchestra, Washington Ballet Orchestra, Washington Opera Society, and National Ballet Orchestra, as well as the Philharmonic Orchestras of St. Louis, Rochester, and Buffalo.
Edward FraedrichEdward Fraedrich, saxophone, made his Kennedy Center debut at the age of 19 with the National Symphony Orchestra playing Glazounov's Concerto in E flat. He has performed numerous recitals in the Washington D.C. area, including recitals for The Smithsonian Institution and the Music-at-Noon Series, and has appeared as soloist with many ensembles, including the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Capitol Wind Symphony, and the Middleburg Chamber Orchestra. He is currently Principal Saxophonist in the Virginia Grand Military Band. Mr Fraedrich is an active saxophone teacher and clinician. More of his students have been accepted into All-District and All-State Bands than any teacher in Virginia. His students have won numerous awards and scholarships to many colleges and universities, and have performed as soloists with several professional and student bands and orchestras. Lynn GaubatzNamed "One of America's Ten Most Outstanding Young Working Women" [ Glamour ], Lynn Gaubatz has wowed audiences as a virtuoso bassoonist on four continents - North and South America, Europe and Africa - including concerts in Vienna, Salzburg, New York, Seville, Malago, Caracas, Chicago, Washington, and Boston. She has performed at music festivals around the world, including Aspen, Tanglewood, and Wolf Trap, where she played on stage in costume in Mozart's Don Giovanni . Her solo performances have been broadcast worldwide by The Voice of America, CBS, PBS, Radio Nacional de Espana, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), and Radio Nacional de Venezuela , and she has played principal bassoon in Austria, Germany, Spain, Venezuela, and the US under Leonard Bernstein, Seijii Ozawa, and Sir Georg Solti. She has given master classes in Salzburg, Seville, Malaga, Caracas, Vienna, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Madison, Alburquerque, and Santa Fe, and taught at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria for several years. Percussionist John Kilkenny appears regularly with such prestigious ensembles as the National Symphony, Washington National Opera, Washington Ballet, Washington Concert Opera, Cathedral Choral Society, Washington Chorus, The Choral Arts Society of Washington, the Master Choral, National Philharmonic, and virtually every other Washington area performing arts organization He has worked with some of the most eminent conductors of our time, including James Levine, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Colin Davis, David Zinman, Robert Spano, David Robertson, Gerald Schwartz, Jai Jai Ling, Marin Alsop, Alan Gilbert, and Lawrence Foster. He has performed or recorded with a wide variety of ensembles, including The Washington Symphonic Brass, Prism Brass Quintet, FOCUS! Festival of Contemporary music Summer Garden Concert Series at MoMA, Piccolo Spoleto Festival Spotlight of Contemporary Music and the 21st Century Ensemble. Currently, he is an associate professor of music at George Mason University. Dana Landis Coming from three generations of trombone enthusiasts, bass trombonist, Dana Landis , started his musical study at the young age of nine. After high school, Mr. Landis received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Applied Music, Trombone from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He then attended The Juilliard School for his Masters Degree in Trombone Performance. He has performed with such prestigious orchestras as The New York Philharmonic, Washington National Opera, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Hartford (CT) Symphony and the Fairfax (VA) Symphony. He was the adjunct professor of bass trombone at Westfield State College in Westfield, Massachusetts (2004-2005) and has lead high school musicians in clinics, master classes and coachings throughout Massachusetts and Virginia. Mr. Landis currently freelances in the greater DC area as well as teaches in McLean, Falls Church, and Vienna. Ken Lee Kenneth Lee holds a Bachelor's degree with Honors in Economics from Cornell University, and has held a Graduate Research Fellowship with the Smithsonian Institution. He studied clarinet with Leon Russianoff of the Juilliard School, and was a member of the United States Army Band, Solo Clarinetist of the Baroque Arts Chamber Orchestra, Friday Morning Music Club Orchestra, Arlington Symphony, and a member of the Anechoic Wind Quintet. Kenneth Lee has served as President of the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association and the Virginia Music Teachers Association. In 2000 he was designated by the Virginia Music Teachers Association as its nominee for the first national "Music Teacher of the Year" selection of the Music Teachers National Association. From 2001 to 2003 he served as National Chair of the Independent Music Teachers Forum of the MTNA, with bi- monthly columns appearing in The American Music Teacher. Lawerence Oates Lawerence Oates is a graduate of the University of Florida and The Catholic University. He has been in the Virginia Chamber Orchestra since 1987 and has been in the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra since its founding in 1981. He has preformed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington Opera, Arena Stage, Prince Georges Opera, and Opera International. Mr. Oates has studied under Adel Sanchez and David Flowers of the National Symphony Orchestra and Vincent Panzarella of the New York Phillharmonic. He has been teaching trumpet in Northern Virginia since 1980 and has adjudicated Solo Festivals and District Band and Orchestra auditions in both Virginia and Maryland. In addition, Mr. Oates serves on the Artistic Advisory Board of Amadeus Concerts in Great Falls, Virginia.
Douglass Wallace Douglass Wallace has performed with the Theater Chamber Players, Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, The Battery Four Percussion Group, Washington Symphonic Brass and Percussion, and The Oblivion Ensemble. Mr. Wallace's orchestral background includes performances with The National Symphony Orchestra, The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, The Washington National Opera, The Harrisburg Symphony, The Deleware Symphony, The Richmond Symphony, The Rochester Philharmonic, and the Alexandria Symphony. With these orchestras and others he has worked with world renowned conductors Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Leonard Slatkin, Kurt Mazur, Pierre Boulez, Placido Domingo, Jeffery Tate, and Valery Gergiev. Mr. Wallace has a Bachelor's Degree and Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with John Beck, and a Master's Degree from The Julliard School where he studied with Greg Zuber. Mr. Wallace is the Director of Percussion Studies at Langley. Bruce BrownBruce Brown was a scholarship student at the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Julius Baker (Principal, New York Philharmonic). He did further studies with Albert Tipton (Principal, Detroit Symphony), Murray Panitz (Principal, Philadelphia Orchestra) and Britton Johnson (Principal, Baltimore Symphony). He played with the Toledo Symphony and the U.S. Navy Band (Principal) in Washington D.C. His private students have been accepted to prominent music schools including Juilliard, the Curtis Institute and the Oberlin and Peabody Conservatories. A long-time teacher for the Fairfax County Schools, he currently does flute sectionals for Northern Virginia middle and high schools as well as teaching privately. Andrew HitzAndrew Hitz has been the tuba player in Boston Brass since 2000. During that time, they have performed in over 30 states and 15 countries including Italy, France, Singapore, Japan, and China. Andrew has also performed solos around the world including such places as Japan, Germany, and Mexico, where he was a soloist with the Marine Band of Mexico. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and was the graduate teaching assistant for world renowned tubist Sam Pilafian at Arizona State University. Andrew has performed with a wide range of ensembles including the New World Symphony, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He is also a founding member of the klezmer quartet Balagan based out of New York City. Andrew's appearances on television and radio include the CBS Early Show, NPR, and Asia This Morning. Andrew is an Educational Ambassador for Jupiter Band Instruments.
